Look, this album probably satisfies a lot of people’s tastes, and I don’t blame them. He just doesn’t have the character to fit in, he just seems awkward saying lines Rick Ross should be.Īs I’ve said above, there’s unfortunately a lot of mediocrity on Ambition, the synth-driven, hip-pop chart runner “Focused,” the ballads “Sabotage,” “White Linen,” and “Lotus Flower Bomb” all show that Wale is having a hard time reminding you why people started pushing his music in the first place. Rick Ross has the hook on the track Chain Music chanting “CHAIN SO BIG CAN’T POP MY COLLAR.” His deep voice, his arrogance and pride in wealth and his goliath, start-stopping cadence are the things that make Maybach Music work for its fans, not Wale’s Washington rasp. Wale just isn’t the right guy to be rolling with the Maybach Music crew. It’s a bit disappointing considering Wale was supposed to be the artist that put Washington D.C. The beats are standard, almost lazy RnB and hip hop joints, and Wale, instead of using the provocative and skilful language that put him in the limelight in the first place, seems to play it safe.

However, what could have been a huge leap forward for Maybach Music and Wale alike ended up being a pretty boring album. I’ll be sure to do it eventually but for now, mainly to keep up with the times, I have to review his second full-length album Ambition.Īmbition, with its title, its back-story and the label it’s under, was set to raise some eyebrows from the outset. I’ve been meaning to review Wale’s debut album Attention Deficit for some time but just haven’t gotten around to it. His second studio album, Ambition was released November 1, 2011. In early 2011 Wale signed on with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, where members of the label released a compilation album, Self Made Vol. The album, although under-shipped, received positive reviews from critics. In 2008, Wale signed to Interscope Records for $1.3 million, and his debut album Attention Deficit was released in 2009 with the singles “Chillin”, “Pretty Girls”, and “World Tour”. While signed to that label, Wale released several mixtapes and appeared in national media including MTV and various urban magazines. Producer Mark Ronson discovered Wale in 2006 and signed him to Allido Records in 2007. Wale became locally recognized and continued recording music for the regional audience. He rose to prominence in 2006, when his song “Dig Dug (Shake It)” became popular in his hometown. Wale Victor Folarin (born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin September 21, 1984), better known by his stage name Wale, is an American rapper from Washington, D.C. Wale was born to Nigerian parents.
